What to Wear: 10 Weekend Essentials That Are Effortless & Stylish

In collaboration with Chums.

As a busy mum, weekends are often a bit of a whirlwind, full of activities, birthday parties, food shopping and family outings. The last thing you want to worry about is what to wear when you need to rush out the door. You want outfits that are practical, comfortable, and stylish without requiring too much thought.

This weekend we’ll be in Whitby, so for me it’s cold walks along the beach and around the town, exploring pretty villages, heading to the pub and going for fish and chips. That all requires practical and warm clothing but I still want to feel and look nice, and thankfully I now have clothes that are perfect for a trip like this and still make me feel like me.

Here are 10 effortless weekend essentials that will keep you looking and feeling great while handling everything on your to-do list.

1. Leggings

Leggings are the ultimate weekend staple for busy mums. Go for a high-waisted pair in a thick, quality fabric that provides support and coverage. Black or neutral shades go with everything, while ribbed or faux leather leggings can add a bit more style and make them a bit more dressy. Wear them with an oversized jumper or hoodie for an easy, put-together look that still looks cool.

2. Nice, comfy trousers

For days when you want an alternative to leggings or it’s warmer weather, loose-fitting, stylish trousers are a great choice. Joggers, wide-leg knit trousers or comfy ladies cotton trousers give a relaxed yet polished vibe. I love those relaxed, elasticated pull-on jeans with a simple t-shirt in the summer months. Choose neutral tones or subtle prints that can be dressed up or down, depending on your plans.

3. A cosy fleece

A soft fleece is a must-have for cooler days. Not only are they incredibly comfortable, but they also add an easy, sporty look to your outfit. Wear it with leggings and trainers, or throw it over a long dress on cooler summer days.

4. A big puffer coat

A warm, oversized puffer coat is a lifesaver for school runs, weekend football training, and outdoor weekend activities. It keeps you warm without sacrificing style. Go for one with a sleek design and a neutral colour so you can wear it with anything.

5. A stylish backpack or oversized bag

When you’re on the go with kids, a spacious yet stylish bag is essential. A backpack allows you to be hands-free while carrying all your essentials, from snacks and wipes to your phone and keys. If backpacks aren’t your thing or you want to be a bit smarter, go for a nice oversized tote bag that fits everything while still looking fashionable.

6. Trendy trainers

Trainers are so popular for us mums now, and it’s what I wear most nowadays. Comfortable, supportive trainers are a must for weekend wear. Classic white trainers, sporty running shoes, or chunky dad trainers all work well for running errands while keeping your feet warm and comfortable.

7. A versatile sweatshirt or knit jumper

A soft, oversized sweatshirt or jumper is perfect for layering over leggings or jeans. Go for a neutral colour like beige, grey, or camel for maximum versatility. If you want a little extra something, choose one with a stylish detail like balloon sleeves, a half-zip, or a ribbed texture.

8. A basic t-shirt or long-sleeve top

You can never have too many high-quality basics. A well-fitting white, grey or striped t-shirt is a wardrobe essential that pairs effortlessly with any bottoms. For cooler days, a fitted long-sleeve top in a breathable fabric makes for the perfect layering piece.

9. Cool & comfy jeans

A great pair of relaxed jeans is a must-have for the weekends. Straight-leg, skinnies, or mom jeans are always stylish (however much we millennials get ridiculed for refusing to give up our skinny jeans!). Look for slightly stretchy denim that allows you to move freely while keeping you looking put together.

10. A baseball cap or beanie

Most of us don’t get a lot of time to get ourselves ready at the weekend when we’re trying to sort out the kids. So if there’s no time to wash your hair then a baseball cap or a cosy beanie is a quick fix that adds a cool, laid-back look to your outfit. Plus, they’re a great way to keep you warm or protect your face from the sun whilst out and about.

Dressing stylishly as a busy mum doesn’t mean you can’t be comfortable too. Thankfully activewear is very trendy now so we can wear our comfy leggings and still look stylish! If you are able to invest in versatile, high-quality items, you can create outfits that are easy to throw on but still look and feel good.
