Some people consider going vegan as a way to be healthier, but it’s vital for you to make sure that you are doing it right before you start exposing your children to this lifestyle. But that being said, if your children want to go vegan for moral or health reasons, what are the things you need to remember?

They Shouldn’t Focus on the Processed Stuff

If you like the idea of your children going vegan for health reasons, it’s important to remember that a key part of a child’s relationship with food is how they react to sweet treats. There are vegan desserts and sweet treats out there such as a brand like Eat It Like that provides different types of chocolate that are vegan-friendly, and there’s a variety of free-from foods that can satisfy a child’s sweet tooth, but if you want your children to go vegan and experience the health benefits, sweet treats need to be cut down drastically. Making Sure They Do It for the Right Reasons

It can be to do with their affinity with animals or the fact that they want to be healthier, but if you want your child to go vegan, it’s got to be their decision. The best thing you can do is to educate them on the moral and health implications of going vegan, and this means showing them the importance of getting enough nutrients and calories. There are nutrients that are tougher to get on a plant-based diet, such as vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Additionally, you need to consider fibre. It’s a great thing, but because a plant-based diet has too much fibre in it, it keeps children feeling full up so they may not get enough of the calories and other nutrients necessary. Therefore, you may want to consider quick and effective ways of increasing their calorie intake, such as nut butter on toast.

Speak with the Teachers

While a vegan lifestyle is certainly far more accepted, the toughest thing with younger children is them doing something that makes them feel different from their peers. If you have any concerns, it’s important to inform the teachers about your child’s diet. The teachers may wonder if children can eat certain things, but it’s a good idea to have an informal chat, just to make sure that you and the teachers are on the same wavelength.

Removing the Boredom

While eating a vegan diet is far more streamlined, it can easily become dull because your children end up eating the same things. This is why it’s important to mix it up; there are a wide variety of healthy and creative dishes that can have a vegan spin. While your children may want to go vegan and you could be encouraging of this, the fact is that they may very well revert back to eating meat or having a vegetarian diet, and if that’s the case, there is no need to feel like they have failed at being a vegan! Clearly, there’s a lot to consider.
